Tips how to loosen up your painting style!

Away from a detailed painting to a loosen up painting style! With video tutorial for a painting exercise!

Have you always painted in a very detail-oriented way and would like to loosen up your painting style?

Then you should read this post!

Here are a few ideas from my own painting practice put together to help you paint more vivid images. To support you more I produced a little video with a painting exercise. When applied regularly, it will boost your creativity and imagination. In addition, it will help you to realize motives spontaneously.

The button to the video can be found at the bottom!

Tip 1. Drawing is an important basis

By drawing, you deal with the objectivity, so you manage to capture the reality and then paint across the borders. After all, your drawing needs to be more detailed than your painting. Only if you know your motive exactly, you can transform it with the painting and dissolve it.

Tip 2. Know the basics of painting

See light and shadow. Recognize and simplify tonal values and shapes. Application of the colors.  Picture composition  . Paint hard and soft edges. Knowledge about the center of interest or focial point in a painting and how it is worked out. Don´t become careless when painting you must never forget the basics.

Tip 3. Abstraction

Abstraction is the removal of reality. How far an artist is from reality it is his decision and defines his style.

Tip 4. Paint impressions and not reality

Painting impressions doesn´t mean painting every detail in a scenery. It is even better not to paint a picture completely and to leave parts of an image unfinished. To capture only the most important of a motive. So simplification is the secret of exciting pictures. Imperfection makes a work fresh and alive.

Tip 5. Relax your mind and body

Loose painting is a state of mind. Stress will inevitably be seen in your work. Relaxation exercises help. Also inspiring music. It is also important to have no time pressure. Especially, the pressure to succeed to paint a perfect picture prevents you to stay relaxed. Taking breaks again and again is just as important.

Tip 6. Choose the right painting accessories

With a long, big brush, you’ll learn to let go of control. It helps to focus on the shapes and not on the lines. Small brushes excite again to go into detail. The watercolor paint is the perfect medium to paint loosely. With chalks, brushes, pens just to name a few, you can make it very creative.

Tip 7. Draw with the brush and not with the pencil

Best not at all or only rough sketch. This leaves more room for spontaneity.

Tip 8. Make constant painting exercises

I am a fan of painting exercises and swear of it. I never start paining without exercises.

You automatically learn to develop your techniques and deal with randomness. You become more confident and spontaneous in dealing with the medium of watercolor.

Because constant painting exercises are extremely important to me, I want to tell you how I do it. Click on the button and take a look at my painting exercise!

Have fun practicing !!
